I'm new to varieties. I've been searching about 2 months now (about 2 rolls a day) and I have a question. I live in New York. I get my rolls from the bank. I've searched well over 100 rolls and the vast majority of pennies are P mint. It seems that D and S mints are rareities. I know that billions of D and S mint pennies were produced but it seems that they don't make it out east (again I've only searched 100+ rolls). Am I at a disadvantage? Logically I would think that once minted, pennies are distributes locally so those searching on the west coast are at an advantage for D and S mints. I would appreciate anyone's input on this matter and thanks in advance to those who respond.

Hi Louis,
I think you hit it right on the head. Based on your location of New York, it it pretty certain that the majority of all cents you get from the bank would be Philadelphia minted coins. D minted coins (Denver) would primarily be found near the center of the country and out west. The San Fransisco S mint coins are not struck for business therefore, only S minted coins from the early days would be found and those have been around for so long, that they do have a tendency to migrate across the country. San Fransisco now strikes Proof coins primarily.
The good thing about this forum is that we have folks from coast to coast. If you are interested in searching D minted coins, you can probably find someone here in the forum who can get you a box, and you might help them out by supplying a box from your local bank.

Louis,
On the bright side it seems that most major DDO varieties are on P mint cents so you have an advantage in finding them.
Major D minted DDOs are few and far in between.
I get excited to see any P mint modern cents in rolls over here.

Louis, I won't say "P" cents, (or any other denominatiion) are hard to find, but every one I get, gets stashed, for the future needs! My albums, (all), are full of holes, "P"! We have "DS" running out our ears. but "P is hard to find. Besides, all the good varieties are "P"!
Welcome to the best forum around!
Dick

Learn what to look for on the Philly coinage for doubled dies. You can always trade coins with us Denver only coin areas. Doubled dies I feel are worth more than RPMs. Stick around/read threads/ask questions. You'll be an expert soon.
