I don't have another 72d as detailed as this one to compare this with, please tell me if there is something different with the columns on each side of the statue. Looks distorted and perhaps doubled to me, your opinions appreciated. Sure need a cherry pickers guide

Looks like a normal 1972 reverse to me. Many of the coins from that period have some bends and bumps that make them look less balanced than the modern cent statue area. From what I hear, the extra column thing started with the single squeeze era (approx 1996) - so there is not much to be found in the center of the reverse on those older cents. _________________ -----

I think Ken meant 1986. The dies got a lot of use that year and seems like there have been a problem with them. A lot of clashes that year and wear will make the columns bigger making the bays smaller. Thus the cramped look of the Statue. Seems like a change was needed as the 1973 Cents looked like a big improvement. _________________ Richard S. Cooper
