Does anyone know what criteria PCGS uses to determine which varieties get included in their various Registry set compositions and which ones do not? What makes a variety a "major variety" as opposed to just an "ordinary"(and therefore not included) variety? Anyone Question

For everyone's information and to close this thread I would like to report that I have learned on a different forum that if the variety is listed in the Cherrypicker's Guide then PCGS will recognize it. Thanks.

That's right they like to use the FS listings from the CPG.

The registry sets only include a subset of those and it seems they based it on what they felt the interest level in each coin was and included only what they think has the highest interest.

They sometimes put Type-1 or Type-2 on coins like the 71-S proof cent DDOs or 36 DDOs. The thing to look out for is the type numbers they use are based on their own ideas.... so for example on the 71-S proof DDOs the one they call Type-1 is realy Die-2 and what they call Type-2 is realy Die-1, I think it means they like the Die-2 better so they called it Type-1. Then on the 36 DDOs the type numbers match the die numbers. It's a bit confusing. Wink

So if my 1982-drr gets listed in cherrypickers then they will recognize it in the registry set? Since there is only one known to exist at this time it would be a tough one to come by!
I assume there is something further than CPG in place that has to be met to get included.

The registry sets only include a subset of the CPG listed coins.

For example the big 70-S DDO FS-029 (aka FS-101) is not included. Some people think it should be but it's not and there's more of them than the 82 DDR and it has a similar strength.

I'd guess the 82 won't ever be included since there's only one known. Maybe if a few hundred get found then it could become a coin that they might list. For me it has a high interest level, I'd love to nab one in a roll search!

Richard,

I'm still looking for that coin. It's tough to find a roll nowaday's . I have searched my roll's with no luck so I suspect that your coin is a tough one to find. I won't dwell on trying to find this coin but I do look for it in circulation. That is a great find and one should appreciate the value that you have found. Congrat's.
