No argument, but what would the wire (or whatever the struck-through item was) do at the edge of the coin? And wouldn't it (the wire) also deform under the high pressure required to strike nickel metal?

Good questions Robert. You are correct in that the metal item or whatever it was would deform under the high pressure. However, since the dies never meet (the planchet is between them) and the strike is so quick, the strike through is not normally too deep. Sometimes the item can be retained in the struck coin (big bucks usually), but most often, the foreign object is ejected when the coin is. Therefore, the first strike it receives would be the only one, and any more deformity would not occur. I would think it is pretty rare that an item would sit inside the collar for more than one strike. If the item sits over the coin and the collar, the strike through would also show on the coin rim. I would also assume that should a die strike a metal object like that, then the die would be slightly damaged and the imperfection might show on the next few strikes. Ultimately, each strike through is unique.
