Got this Washington State Quarter that appears to have been struck through grease and retained the grease. Any idea if I am correct on this.

That is a nice error. I like it. It looks like a crater to me. Are you sure the goo is still in there?

Looks like someone thought it was a carp, and shot it!

Looks like a piece of heavy grease or wax in the crater.

I'm impressed, if Washington can put so much detail on a fish, you would think Wyoming could put some detail on a horse.

GarryN, I have to agree with you. I thought there was something "wrong", when I saw my first WY quarter, but later got several of them, and the same thing, "Nothing"! There is one engraver who did NOT earn his pay. Maybe that is the reason, "no pay"???

I don't think the WY Quarter was a lack of detail. It was the cutout for the State Emblem without the details. So I don't think it was an oversight on the details. Looks like the orginal was cut out of plywood. Wink Wink

Im sure there is a reason it was done that way. It is also close to a design made out of metal that is sold in the Houston airport. Some of these designs need to be criticized a little once in a while.

I'm dubious that it's grease.

It should be flattened a great deal more.

Is there anything visible opposite it?
