The extra metal on obverse appears to be brass.

ken, your images are great, but. you need more lighting on them, (for me) . I can't see the details well enough to suggest more. Maybe Bob, or Coop might give you more info. The obverse looks like it took a very hard hit(s). Is the date 1916-d, or maybe 1946-s? Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hi Dick,I lightened the pics and zoomed in on the possible hit area you mentioned.Date is 1916s.The verticle lines are on scanner screen and not on the coin.

Ken, The pictures are better, with the increased light. The closer view of the "hit" area(s) confirms my thought that this coin had been in some very hard rocks, or something similar. That is post mint damage, and appears to be another hit on the reverse.

appears to be a strike though error. Some of the details are missing on the ONE Wheat ears.
Looks like the coin image was taken through a 2X2. The verticle color bars show on it? It also appear to have some white cardboard there also at 4-6:00.

Coop, those weak, indistinct vertical bars are from the scanner. I couldn't see enough of the rev. to make a comment. the spot at his back, rim area looks like a deep dent on the ri,. The two spots at the hair line, and nose are what I think are damage, deep gouging like from a rock. I can't see well eniough to tell if there is "strike-thru" evidence.
