Does anyone know the rarity of the 1961 D RPM-001
I was looking through several rolls of 1961 D Lincoln Cents and I have found 10 of these. Then I searched on Ebay and found ten more from one other person, this was a couple of months ago.
I know Coneca has it listed at URS-11 But that seems a little low.
Thanks,
Howard

The URS numbers I don't what they translate to. But I knew one sell on ebay that bought three rolls a few years ago and the market is probably flood with them. If you have many, I would sell them very slowly as the price will drop if too many are let loose at one time.
Welcome to the forum.

Welcome Howard
Yes the URS number is too low, URS-11 would mean only 501-1000 are known but there must be many more of these.
Just a few roll quantity finds can change the URS number fast!

Thank you.
I saw the URS number but that just seemed alittle off there.

Howard.. I mostly ignore CONECA's rarity scale, since I find them to be waaaaay off.
I have several rolls of different RPMs that CONECA shows as only 1-2 known, and when I search the same dies on ebay.. I find that they are very common.
The 1961-D/Horizontal D, in my opinion, is a common variety.. and its added value over other 1961 RPMS is because of the fact that it is a horizonal RPM.

I agree with the assessment that they are relatively common. I have a few myself, and one of them borders on a mid to late die state. This fact alone means there were plenty of them struck and are out there. Of course, there are just as many variables as to how many have been found/reported. Either way, it is a nice variety, but not worth spending a bunch on.

I guess that we need to discover the contex of when those publications were written. A lot of the ones we view are common have only surfaced many years after they made the publication. Intrest in Cents has boomed on the last 10 years, which they didn't see happening. The advent of the internet/better ways to search coins has also accelerated the hobby.

Coop, think you have hit the nail squarely on the head. That is likely why there are some new varieties showuing up, now, as opposed to before. And, it is just going to get even more saturated.

I have many RPMs that don't have listings yet and many DD's also.
If someone has a copy of the rarity scale you might start a new thread and post it as I don't mean what those numbers mean?

It's a good scale to use.
There's one typo in that scale:
URS-9.....126 TO 250
Since it's almost a binary scale if you just remember that URS 11 is up to 1000 you can estimate everything else. So 12 is 2000, and 13 is 4000 and so on.
It's neat to throw in some coins and where they fit the scale, note these are numbers based on the old CPG so more have been found of most:
URS-0.....NONE KNOWN
URS-1.....1 KNOWN, UNIQUE
URS-2.....2 KNOWN
URS-3.....3 OR 4 KNOWN 1958 DDO-1
URS-4.....5 TO 8 KNOWN
URS-5.....9 TO 16 KNOWN 1970-s DDO-1
URS-6.....17 TO 32 1971-s PF DDO-2 or 1969 DDO-1
URS-7.....33 TO 64 1971-s PF DDO-1
URS-8.....65 TO 125 1917 DDO-1
URS-9.....126 TO 250 1984 DDO-2
URS-10....251 TO 500 1936 DDO-2 and DDO-1
URS-11....501 TO 1000 1983 DDO-1
URS-12.....1001 TO 2000 1997 DDO-1
URS-13.....2001 TO 4000 1980 DDO-1
URS-14.....4001 TO 8000 1983 DDR-1
URS-15.....8001 TO 16000 1955 and 1984 DDO-1
URS-16.....16001 TO 32000 1972 DDO-1
URS-17.....32001 TO 65000
URS-18.....65001 TO 125000
URS-19.....125001 TO 250000
URS-20.....250001 TO 500000 1995 DDO-1

Those numbers aren't very real. I have one that has a rarity of 2. That means two known? I bought mine from someone else. So those numbers must be way off. If you added several zeros to them, that might be more real?

Yes! For example the 1994 DDR is URS-3 in the CPG but that coin was discovered in 95 and the CPG was around 99 so almost none were known when they said URS-3. I have found 4 of these myself.

Rarity scales with something like die varieties is a hit and miss issue to begin with. Unless everyone reports all their findings, there cannot be an accurate measure of what's known, let alone what's out there yet to be found.
Only way to know whether a die variety is rare is to be in the market for a number of years, search a lot of coins, and get used to the ones that come up time and time again. Those are the common ones.
