With a little more experience under my belt, I went through a few of my proof and special mint sets that I'd already search when I first got into the hobby. It is not huge find - but not bad either. I'm pretty sure this 1967 SMS half is a DDR. There are split points on most of the stars in the top half of the reverse - and minor split serifs and light separation lines on many of the letters of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
It is amazing what you can miss when you don't know what you are looking for.

Very true about experience making a difference. Your Half dollar is indeed a doubled die. I found a DDR half in my special mint set as well, and it looks similar to yours. Although minor, there is no doubt as to what it is.

Dick: I bought the TDO as a regular Coin and didn't notice it till about an hour later. If I had noticed it as the show I would have bought them all. By the next show he had noticed it and wanted 6 times the value for it. Still would have been a bargain. The 1964 DDO I found at a show.
The 1964-D reverse & 1966 I found going through halves in change. I must have looked at $300 dollars in halves to find them. I saved only a few AU looking ones in rolls. The rest went back to the bank. I've seen few of the halves since then. Some one must be hoarding them.

I also enjoy collecting the JFK varieties. I have 16 doubled dies in my collection right now including 7 -1964s (includes one with a DDO and DDR), 6 -1964Ds, a 1968S Proof, a 1971D DDO/DDR combo, and a 1974D DDO. Here is a pic of some of the awesome doubling of the 74D DDO. Next to the Lincoln cents, this denomination is my favorite.

Coop, and Bob, I have been collecting varieties for only a couple years, and have been so busy with my cennts, that the others have been neglected horribly! I just need a couple more lifetimes, to get around to all of them! I have a box of"D"rolls, (except for the '78. Presently working on the "P" batch. They are very scarce! I have a couple more boxes of half dollars ordered, but they won't be in 'til next week. Now that I have finished my two boxes from SO. CA., annd two from North/Central AZ., maybe I can get to some other denomination. I am almost current with thr states series, just need rolls of Wyoming, and Utah. These are not "P", and "D" sets. The sets are only pairs. Maybe I will get to the 4-bit poeces later.
The only thing I do dofferent from Chuck, is to "rack 'em as I get 'em", and sort out the "P" for later search for my albums. Yhe last that gets checked are the '60's, '70's, '74's, and the '82's . They get taken care of, and set aside, after the rst have been counted and tabulated.
Just noted my "gab" count. Too bad my vision wasn't the same!

Dick: You know the Cents that you hope their is a DD on? I save the AU/BU Cents before 1990 in a tube marked AU's. You never know when a fellow collector needs a nice coin to replace one in his collection. Ask Gary. He will tell you.

I found another Kennedy Half DD today. It is nicer than the one in my original post - but unforutately not as nice as the ones shown by Bob and Coop.
It was a 1964 mint set find (1964 P 50c) -- having a very minor DDO and a decent TDR on the flip side.
The reverse has doubling all the way around -- but it is clearer at the HALF DOLLAR side of the coin. I looked on CONECA's site. There are a ton of 1964 listings - but this didn't look like anything described.
This was a set I'd searched before, when I first got into the hobby. I may as well search the rest of my collection again, as it is clear to me I did not know what I was looking for back then.

Man I really do like this site. I just decided to check a couple of my 1967 SMS and low and behold I also have one of the DDR with the splits in the stars.
How common is this DDR?

My guess is that such minor DDR half dollars do not command much of a premium. There is probably more value in the personal satisfaction of finding and identifying it.
But on the other hand, if you can get a good photo of it - chances are it will sell. Buyers are not likely to just 'trust you' that it is a DDR-- they'd rather see it.
