I was reading the topic on the new nickels, and one member wrote: "Even some different deadheads might be refreshing."

This got me thinking. What about the return of "Liberty" gracing the obverse of our coins? The last time Liberty appeared on a coin was in 1947 on the Half Dollar.

Wondering what others think. Personally, I find many of the Liberty designs so much more interesting and beautiful than some of today's coins.

A lot of us have been saying that for years.

Get rid of the deadheads! Bring back allegorical Liberty!

I couldn't agree more. The older designed coinage has always had a special place for me. They were mostly gorgeous designs that made our coinage something special and unique. Should we ever go back to those sorts of designs, I would be very, very happy indeed.

I could not agree more.

I am surprised we have not learned our lesson. The state quarter program has just turned into a 10 yr plug for various states, the presidential dollar idea is falling on deaf ears. The commemorative nickel program in 2004 is going in the right direction. At least the nickel reverses have some historical significance. But I believe the obverse designs featuring presidents has run its course. There have been no unflattering Liberty allegories on coins since the beginning. We should go back to that for a time and see how that works out. I was always a fan of Ronald Reagan, but now that he has died, I predict resolutions suggesting we depict him on a coin. And the commemoratives, God, its going to get thick. Unfortunate. So nothing will change any time soon.

I just know the presidental/first lady coins are going to be approved because that is the most moronic idea yet. JMNSHO

Garry is right about Ronald Regan being depicted I think. I've already read some articles on line suggesting his image appear on a dime. And there has already been talk of putting Regan on the $10 or $20 bill.
