Saw this on ebay.

Can't be trails but I laughed at it and not sure what it is.
Post mint?

Although it's somewhat peculiar-looking, it's quite possibly struck through a very late-stage obverse die cap.

Not sure if you can see it in this pic, but these die lines appear under the ear in the beard area also. Here is the best I can get as far as a pic.
I sent a couple of these 95's BJ, one shows the lines in the beard area better.

BJ, I haven't read your article yet. I have to copy, and change font, and size, but I saw the illustrations of the die "seating position"s, and the "indicated directions of the trails, and wavy steps, and how they are very much alike. It explains a great deal about how they are caused. My impression: Not due to "single stroke" , rather a mechanical "tolerance" in the fitting of the die(s) in the presses. Are all the dies leaving visible trails, and/or wavy-steps showing a LDS condition? Great work, and it shows many long hard hours of very heavy concentration!
Dick

BJ,
Let us know what you think about this coin after you have had a look. I am very curious as to what may have caused this anomaly.

As far as the 'extra beards' go, all we were asking for was objectivity and acceptance of the fact that it could be something else. As stated in the other thread, I understand your hesitancy. I encourage your examination of the pics I posted there of the 6 different dies and see if any of that changes your mind.

Hi BJ,
I am glad you received the coins.
The above coin you posted is a 1992 P in case anyone wants to keep an eye (get it Wink ) out for this. I plucked 5 or 6 of this same oddity from a roll I had put aside in 92.

Let me add two better overview pics so you can see how obvious this is.

I haven't seen anomalies like this before, so I confess that I'm stumped.

I never doubted that the defect was on the die face. The only questions are what caused it and when. Perhaps other examples will show up that will shed some light on its origin.
