Hi guys, Ive been wondering if anyone has noticed any of the ads for the wheat deals in one of the leading, (if not the best) coin magazines. Theres an ad for a full "ammo can" in a recent issue I received. I was thinking of giving them a try but would like to hear if any of you have bought from a big (whole sale) company before and what I might receive in such a "big money deal".

Jayboy, I have seen the same ads. I often wondered myself. But nowaday's we all know that the key dates and semi-keydates are not in these bags. "Errors and Varieties" are a different story. You might get lucky with a key date but If the sellers of such bag's I don't think there going thru them for Varieties. I wouldn't buy one for I have enough here, around me to search.

You make an excellent point Rhubarb. Most Wheaties bags/boxes/etc have been searched for nicer coins and/or key dates. It is just impossible to say. On the other hand, the numbers of error/variety coins in some of these may be substantial or non existent too. I have not had many purchases of bulk Wheaties that has not returned some varieties to my collection. If you think it's a good deal, you are going to take a chance on it anyway.

As long as the price per coin is the right price, then there shouldn't be any harm in buying them. You are very highly unlikely to run into any coins that would have value in a standard price guide (high grade coins or semi key dates), but your chances of running into really nice doubled dies are pretty decent. 99% of all sellers of wheats don't look through each individual coin for doubled dies, etc.

The whole point to this is to study, learn, read, look at the photos here and elsewhere, then get into the buying. The key is to know more than the seller and you'll always be on top of the game.

I have searched through 4 or 5 bags of the bulk "unsearched" wheaties . Within those bags is where I found my 1917 DDO and my Type 2 1936 DDO. I know those bags had been searched before I recieved them but as Bob and Rhubarb point out most people just look for the Key and Semi Key dates and ignore anything else. I am not sure what the person is charging for the ammo cans or how many wheaties are in there. But I usually pay around $210.00 for a bag of 5,000.
