I just came across a 1956p bu coin that does not have vdb on the shoulder. Also looks like it may be a ddo as there are 2 I's in Liberty(not a bie cent). The base of the L is cut off and there appears to be a portion of a 2nd I.I did the best I could with the pics.Thank you for all your comments.

Ken,
Your coin seems to be a late die state coin that is suffering from die deterioration. What you think are two 'I's in LIBERTY is actually the deterioration. The lack of a VDB could be from a filled die, or another attribute from the wear of the die during the long life it obviously had.

Thanks Bob.So the fact that there is not even a deformity(very smooth with no partial impression) where the vbd should be if means nothing?Ken

Not necessarily Ken. There is always the chance that it wasn't there to begin with, but that is highly unlikely. Since this die struck so many coins, I am willing to bet that the VDB simply wore off (The VDB would be raised on the die since it is incuse on the coin). Had this been an EDS coin, it may have been easier to tell.

Another side point: It was hubbed with one of the hubs that had the broken lower part of the 6 on it. These happened on several different dies and adds no extra value for it. But you can see it on your coin.
