i have looked at.. must be a million 44 d's now. a new handful every day. *never found a single one*
how RARE are these coins exactly? why haven't i found one? i've found basically everything but this one..
there were 430.5 million 44D's made.. how many T1 & T2's exist? what's the ratio.. any idea?
answer me this.. if i look through X amount of 44d's, i should find a d/s - what is X?

What I did was go to www.lincolncent.com and looked through 12 1944-D cents and I found two 1944 D/S Type 2.

Gripton,
I looked forever and have not found either of them
But I did get something good.....
I was searching a BU 44-d roll and thought I had a D/S but looking closer it was D/D RPM-7 FS-021.11 and there were 4 of them in the roll. They looked so good I sent all 4 to ANACs for grading.
I got back 2 in MS65-RED and 1 MS66-RED and nearly fainted since the last one got MS67-RED!!!!
I don't pay much attention to top pop grades but there must not be a lot of these graded 67-RED so I was happy but I'm still searching for either D/S.

I too have searched thousands of 1944D coins. I did in fact find a D/S #1 about a year ago. I have also found 6 of the D/S#2. There is no way we can make a formula that would work as far as finding a specific variety. No one knows how many have already been found and how many are still in circulation. Since I found mine only last year, then that shows that there was at least 1 still out there. I had given up on finding one, but as you all know...when you least expect it, you may very well get lucky.

well i know there's no formula, i know it doesn't exactly work like that.. this one is just frustrating me beyond belief, and has been forever. i think i'm gonna just buy one, or both. if they show up i'll sell the worst ones i guess.
tough coin apparently.. that premium is indeed justified

My point is that the coin is not prohibitively expensive. If you add up the value of 1944-D cents you may have purchased, and the time you spend searching, that adds up to much more than the cost of the coin. In my opinion, I would buy the coin and the time would be better spent studying it.

Both things are true.
Sometimes it's worth it to buy a neat variety if you want it.
Some things like a 55 DDO you might never find.
But looking at millions of cent's is fun for me and I find stuff when I least expect it.
Often when trying for a given variety I don't find it but find something else to motivate the search along.
As long as you get rid of the coins after you search them it's not a waste of money, you can tube the searched roll and sell or trade it and try again.
