this is a very in depth discussion, I love these , anyway I generally do not feel a coin should not be slabbed that is not worth the grading fees. I have a handful of VAM dollars that I would not consider slabbing because they are low grade, I put them in Coin World holders and that is just fine. I also have some nice cents that are not expensive so I put them in the holders as well. I still believe higher priced coins should be slabbed. If only to authenticate them. The slabs also protect them (from me) I drop coins occasionally. I used to prefer PCGS and I still like their holders, but since being a member here, I appreciate ANACS and NGC attribution services. I have some real nice RPMs that are attributed by NGC and I also have two cuivil war tokens attributed by NGC. Similarly a few Morgan Dollars with VAM attribution in ANACS holders. On the other hand I have a 1799 dollar that is in a PCGS holder and I would love to find out what the attribution of that one is. Collecors Universe sold off Bowers and Merena recently to concentrate on the slabbing business. They also own PCGS. But NGC hired the former CEO of PCGS and they have made alotof inroads particularly in the token business. If you look at civilwartokens.com everyone of the tokens there is slabbed by NGC.

Another interesting point about slabbing that some people do not like is you cannot see the edge of the coin. Edges are important in colonial coins and other 18th century coinage. Rick Snow reported in one of his Longacre Ledgers that he had suggested to the major services that the cut out a piece of the flexible insert that holds the coin in place in order to see edges on particular coins. One of these is the attached.

PCGS and NGC have taken Snow up on his suggestion. I saw this coin at the MidAmerica coin expo in Chicago and the reeded edge is visible.

Boy did I open a can of worms. But all this insight is well worth it.

yes alot of these conversations segue into the slabbing controversy, then look out!

Here is another one of those reeded edge indian cents. You can see the edge at 5:00 on the obverse. I also saw this coin at the show. Its actually the same pattern as the prior coin with a high profile pedigree.
