What to look for in new Monroes?

I have just returned home with 3 Monroe rolls 1 adams ,both D-damnit-and all advise will be so appreciated.I am waiting till advise before I open them ..so hurry lol!

I'm no expert on Monroe dollars but I did hear of a few varieties/errors out there:

1. "Wrong planchet" errors are rumored to exist from the Phila mint but I haven't seen any stories of them being found. They'd be copper nickel instead of "golden" colored. Maybe there are some from Denver? Who knows.

2. There are some "blank" coins floating around. That is, no portrait/eagle. There may also be some "missing edge lettering" or "doubled edge lettering" so be sure to look at those closely. For sure these exist for Adams and I think the "blanks" also exist for Monroe. Not sure about Monroe lettering though.

3. I think there are several minor doubled dies and rotated dies too but I'm not up to speed on them. You might try an internet search or search on ebay. I think these are minor varieties and don't carry much of a premium. At least not as much of a premium as #1 and #2 above.

I'm honored by your comment but I must say that Chuck and Bob P and many others here know a lot more than I do. This website/forum is a great resource.

Too bad there weren't any blank or wrong planchet dollars there. Keep looking though- you never know what you'll find or where you will find it.

I'm not sure what you have there, but those may be "sintered" dollars, a minor "planchet error".

The story as I understand it is, some dollar planchets somehow became coated with powdered metal/debris. The planchets became heated (annealed) during the normal minting process and this heating caused the powdered metal/debris to bond to the planchet. The result is a dark gray-ish color to the finished presidential dollar coin, unlike the normal golden color. I've seen some sintered coins and it's not a rare error, more like an uncommon one. Not much premium for those but it's interesting and it's certainly easy to detect on a coin pulled from a fresh roll.

robert, I think what I have a roll of are these- "This next coin is new to the series. On this coin, the edge lettering die seems to have been inadvertently laser-etched, making the entire edge of the coin appear frosted or matte-like. At first glance, without putting a loop to the coin, the edge appears simply less shiny than normal coins. Magnification of the edge of the coin reveals the lines associated with laser etching. While NGC is not recognizing this the matte edge Adams $1 at this time, we are currently investigating it for attribution. "-I need to get a better macro lens than the one I have home made,but I am gonna try to take better pics now.

Hang on to them. They probably won't be very valuable but you never know.
