Looks like a whole-lotta-grease Aaron. I think the giveaway is the date not being affected. I am pretty sure that had it been a cap, the entire obverse would have been affected. If I am worng in that respect, I am sure someone will correct me Laughing

It looks like a strike thru grease to me. As BobP said, had it been a die cap, the date would have probably been affected.

Grease is just a catch-all phrase for struck through dirt, metal fragments, grease, oil or any combination of the above.
Another occurrence is struck through goop...an oily blob of grease and dirt almost looking like black tar. This can fall off after striking the coin and leave a common grease filled die look.

Still a keeper. With that much of a strike through, someone would be interested in it. I find the fields below LIBERTY and above the date the most interesting. That field area is also distorted. I know, just another question on how that could of happened.

Hmmmmm....

I'm thinking it could have been struck through a capped die but that area near the date was opened up. I mean struck through a capped die but the cap was splitting and opening up in the date area.

Sound possible? Rolling Eyes

Late stage die cap that had the portion that would have affected the date broken off.

There is also another area under LIBERTY that is unaffected. A late stage die cap is a possibility, but I am still leaning more toward it being a strike through (which is actually what a capped die is) of grease.

Bob - Do you see the line going through Lincolns head just about eye level. That is the bottom of the stairs on the memorial building. In early stage die caps, this would have been more pronounced.

I do see the line BJ, but I am afraid I am not experienced enough on error coins to positively identify it as a late die cap. I took a look at a late die cap dime I have here to see if I can find anything that proves it one way or another, but I can't. So, I will definitely yield to the more experienced error coin specialists.
