This 1936 coin seems to have lettering, could it be VDB or what?
Thanks, Teryble

Yes, it is the VDB.

Hi Dick, Isn't it in the wrong place? Have you've seen this before?
Thanks, Teryble

Maybe you're seeing clash from EPU on the reverse showing between the bust and rim on the obv.
Question

Tery,
I really don't think there is anything there other than some corrosion , gunk, and hits. If it were a clash of the reverse motto, the lettering would be on the truncation of the bust...not the area between the bust and rim.

Be patient please.....Now clashes are the opposite side showing through...right? I was thinking this was the VDB just misplaced?
Thanks Bob, Teryble

Tery,
Clashes would be the design elements struck upside down and inverted. Therefore, the bottom of the obverse would show clash marks of the top of the reverse and vice versa. I am 100% certain this is not a clash, and I think you knew that from the start. As far as being a misplaced VDB, I don't think so either. The area where your anomaly shows is not where the VDB would be, and the VDB was placed onto the bottom of the bust The size of the characters is also wrong. Since the VDB is also incused (sunk into the profile) then that makes this scenario even more unlikely.

Bob, the only difference in the placement of the VDB, is now, higher up ion the base of the bust, whereas they were so far down that many times they were obliterated by anything, and everything that got lodged there. They were not easily seen in the photo, but knowing where they "were", are, was the basis of my comment. There is nothing elsewhwere to be confused with. Please correct me if I am wrong.

You are not wrong Dick, and I agree with your assessment. I sure wish I could see this coin in hand, and will email Tery to see if she will send it to me. Technically, there would be nothing that would show up in that area. I have a feeling it is only scratches and gouges, but would need to see the coin to confirm it.

The VDB is not punched in. It is part of the design put in place by the master die. So there is no way for it to be misplaced. The galvano places it in the master die where it should be on all Cents from that year from all three mints. So a mispunching couldn't happen.
