I thought it only had the obv but it had the reverse stuck inside it. It's an 81-p and it has an obv and rev.

What causes that, I've never seen anything like it before

The coin has been hollowed out...most likely with a lathe. Magicians coins are made this way, as are the two headed or two tailed pieces. In this case, I believe they may have been able to put a dime in there.

I agree. You have seen the "four-bit" piece, that I posted, with only the OBV present. I guess the "magician" needed the REV for something else, as it was missing in the box of half dollars.

It was probably made from two different coins. Turning them in a lathe removes the unwanted face of the coins.

I guess that make me a magician if I wanted to be. I would use a collett to hollow out the either the reverse or obverse. The piece on the bottom wasn't bored out with a lathe. It appear's to be a CNC Mill using a .062 thousand't endmill. A picture of the entire base would tell for sure. Just so ya know I have never defaced a coin.

An old thin barber dime fits inside, then you can put the other side on and it closes so tight it's very hard to get it open and looks very normal but if you drop it the sound gives away that it's hollow.

Do magician's coins typically close that firmly? Seems like it might spoil the trick, with the magician struggling to open that penny. Perhaps it was a hiding place?
