In having a chance to play around with lightning photography!! I took this image in my driveway - no filters, no special lenses. Just a tripod, a Nikon D80, a 50-55 lens, and a little luck with ten second exposures at F3.5.

Very cool!
What I especially like about horizontal lightning is how it's less hidden in the upper altitudes. California has far less T-storms, but we once had a show that approached this spectacular shot.

When I was just a kid. living in Flagstaff, AZ., we had some very hairy lighting and thunder storms. there were times when it seemed to be just one continuous batch of lightning. We also had "fire-balls", the kind that run on the ground. My sister nearly was hit by one. I think we both wet our pants!

Yes, I know how scary "fireballs" can be.
Once, while driving on a visit to Minnesota, our car was intercepted by "ball lightning". A half-dozen softball sized glowing orbs descended from a stormy sky, skimmed and bounced off the outer skin of the car. Recalling that experience is like something from the old "Outer Limits" TV series...it spooks me to this day.

While Living in Mexico, I have seen electrical storms that, at night, light up the sky like daylight! It is a continuous display of lightning flashes, so many that they seem to be constant. The lightning is contained in the clouds, and we have never seen a lightning bolt, during these storms. They are quite spectacular. they are also normally dry. whenwe see a very black area in daylight,it is a downpour that I jave only seen in the northern country. Up in Flagstaff, AZ. There the thunder storms are very noisy, and very wet!
