Are you talking about the mark on the right sides of the date? In that direction that would be die wear (Like the 53-55 Cents)or plating movement. Depending on what we are looking at.

Also not machine doubling. During the strike the plating get broken through and the zinc starts to react. Usually raising first, then falling and then..........

Probably happens to 50% or more of the Lincoln Cents.

it seems that if they are having that much (many) problems with the penny, they would look for other metals to use.... then comes the plating. why plate?

I remember a long time ago when I first started to see coins like that. At first I thought it was the Martini's. So I contacted people here and found out I wasn't drunk at all.
