I didn't think quarters are plated? If they were wouldn't the sandwiched edge be plated as well.

maybe plating was an improper word to use.
the planchet missed a processing procedure before the stamping, or compressing or whatever the minting machine does.
so my question is did this coin miss something
Thanks
Mike

Mike, again, I sday yes. It is missing the plating, that is why the dull featureless appearance. I wondered about that when they first came out, and asked "someone". they said it is missing all, or a part of the plating, (in my quatrers case. It only had about 50% of the shiny surface on the rev. It was a NH coin). So, yes it did miss the plating. There are times when some foreign subatance will adhere to all, or a part of the surface, and the plating will not stick. Actually, I believe it is a type of elecrtoplating process.

Coop, That entered my mind, as I was reading, but some where in the past, before I started being such a "pain", I read where the process was similar to what I stated. I do'nt recall who, but it might have been from CONECA. To answer your question, I wonder of the "plating on the faces, is treated in soome manner to allow the surfaces to take on the plating , (read that as "shiny finish"), which we see mostly. The exceptions are those we see like the ones Mike asks about, and I'm sure we all have one, or some with varying degrees of the "Plating" missing. Electroplating would involve the entire surface, edges, and all. I knaow they didn't go over them with a "poilishing rag, to make them shiny. "Sintering, or Sintered" comes to mind, but I still don't recall who it was that explained it to me.

To me it appears as acid dipped. The rims look uneven and if it was a sandwiched coin with the out layers missing they would be smooth.

Can't say for sure from the pic.
I'm thinking if it looks like copper it could be a planchet missing the outer clad layer. I don't know of anything plated on quarters, I think they are a clad sandwich with a copper center layer. But I don't think that's what it is.
Maybe a sintered planchet or just something happened to it maybe fire or stained by something after mint.

Ed, that is what I was referring to, the clad layers. Thanks for clearing that up.

Ed: Don't forget the gold plated/platinum know offs they TV leaches are selling. But this coin looks too rough to be plated. Probably a close up on this coin you could see where the metal is etched and appearing burnt.

I found most of them in change. A couple I paid a little for and found out they were worth less than face value....

Coop, great photos!
This calls for posting my acid-dipped Aussie penny
It looks like it was hit with a million tiny hammers.
