Found this 1938 D lincoln recently and can't figure what variety it is. Looks different then any I've run into before and I can't find any references to it. Unfortunately it's pretty scratched up. Maybe someone here has seen similar or give an opinion. Thanks

My first guess (and it's just a guess) is that it's damage done after the minting process.

Hard to imagine a die making that "D".
