I've posted this one before as you old timers know, this is for the newbies, the only thing I know about this coin is, that it's post 82, zinc/copper clad, no date as you can see, cause, press operator left his wipe rag between planchet and obverse die, 100% of planchet covered..................

It does look like a canvas or rag to clean the grease off. What does the reverse look like? Nice find Very Happy

The reverse is perfectly fine, it would have been kind of neat though if some of the rag did wrap around to strike through on both sides, but that would have had to be done intentionally.

If the reverse if fine, then it would be possible to tell with close approximation (possible with 100% certanty) the date of the coin. Maybe you should try and do that.

That's a good idea, start by looking at the AM on the rev, if it's a close AM it's probably a 1993+
Then the statue and FG style might tell you more after that.

Well, I checked out the reverse, it's a wide AM, the statue isn't very pronounced due to the die was cleaned, a lot of wire brush marks from the cleaning in the flat field, so, 82 to 92, a ten year spread.........................?

So it's probably pre 93 (wide AM)

Now to get closer you might look at the FG to see if it is reverse die variety 5 or 6.

If the G of FG has the kickstand (RDV-6) it would be 89 or newer.

If no kickstand on G (RDV-5) it would be 88 or older.

Example of RDV-6 (on a 1989) and RDV-5 (on a 1988):

n1tot, if you could post a picture of the reverse, it would be a lot easier for us to tell the date.
