I've bought, but not yet received, a 1970 mint set where the S mint cent is supposedly a Wiles RPM#1. I'm guessing that it's not worth a whole lot because I didn't pay a lot extra for the set. Is it worth cutting out and selling or should I just stick it in my exo/error book?

Actually Smed, the RPM is a very nice one, and is mostly only found in mint sets. I would definitely hold on to it as the only way to get one is normally to get it from the mint set. As far as its worth, I'd say it worth between 10 and 15 bucks.

Would you cut it out of the cellophane or would you leave the mint set intact?

Me? I'd cut it out and spend or sell the rest of the coins....it may not be the wisest thing to do, but I'd have no use at all for the other coins.

Thanks for the replies. I'll probably cut it out of the set and keep it. The entire value of the set is in the half, which was only distributed in mint sets. I wound up winning 4 1970 mint sets from the same seller, the other 3 of which are supposedly unopened (yeah right) that I'll more than likely stash away.

Two years ago I bought a set of Lincolns in several Whitman folders and emptied the best of them into a Dansco. I found that my 1970-S large date was an S/S like yours and in very good condition, so it's staying where it's at. That was actually my "first find" btw.

I'm hoping to find a small date or two... that would be sweet!

False. Small dates have been found in bags, rolls, pocket change, and mint sets, all in about equal proportions...about 5,000 large date cents to every small date cent.
