The 1953-1957 years were prone to them because they were so over used. They used them till the dies died! Especially common is the machine doubled dates on the 1957 Cents.

gm99: The problem with Ed's coin and yours is that if they came from the same die (Which could of happened as the mint marks are almost in the same location and the die chip on the inside of the 9 are almost the same) the marks on Ed's coin is just die movement or called machine doubling. It is not a doubled die, but just machine damage caused during striking. This happens commonly on dies from different years and the 1957, 1968 and 1969 are the most found from those years. But MD happens on all years, proof or business strikes. It is just part of the striking process when the die/machinery is not tightly fitted to the machine. A true variety will have the same doubling on every coin struck with a certain die. Not just the loose distortion that varies from coin to coin on a MD coin.

WOW! I have 3.5 million dollars worth here! Maybe if I sell them all, I can afford that beautiful 1943 reprocessed cent that was really, really shiny and had that awesome shifted numbers and mintmark.! All he wanted was $499, 999!
