They're not trails, and I've seen this effect before. The faint ridges apparently follow the original streaky texture of the planchet. My guess is that, during the strike, the plating buckled slightly along the lines originally laid down on the unplated planchet. I suppose one could call it "guided" blistering. It's also possible that the unplated planchet had relatively deep parallel grooves imparted by rotating descaling brushes. These would not necessarily be erased by the strike.

a tip off is probably that i can see the trails even on the face and the suit.that should not be right?

Great answer Mike and I agree with you 100%.
The one thing to remeber is taht a trail line must have a starting point, which is a design element. That is why I have called it a design extension, for that is what it is an addition to the design.

Carol, this is only an opinion, but I believe every photo of trails, also show a very smooth surface area. So anything else would be such as Mike explained, ot any number of reasons that the surface would br very un even. either thru polishing, or other , sic, damage to the die, or the planchet. IMHO.

Mike, you always have great answers!
I noticed that some off center zincolns have the same sort of plating texture in the unstruck area of the planchet.
