Coin World Sep 13 issue

He bought an "extremely rare Snow 1 variety of 1856 Flying Eagle cent, misattributed as S-2a, from the Heritage Numismatic Auctions sale... in Pittsburgh".

Paid $9,200 for what he said could easily have been a $20K coin!

-Repunched "5" in the date

He also had this coin some time ago in ANACS XF45 for $17,500.

I cant put the image of that one here but its on my hard drive. I tell you it looks much better than the most recent one. He said in the description of the earlier one that there were 4 known. He has apparently found another!

Boy, would I be ... peeved if I were the seller of that coin. I'd think that if Heritage had done their job, I'd be $10,000 or more dollars richer. Indeed, if I were the seller, I might even be contacting Heritage asking for them to cough up some of my "lost" revenue!

well Im not sure that is that case. Here is another 1856 on Snow's site, a Snow 3, which comes up frequently, so to speak, and that is VF-35 and $11,000. I dont think there is much of a premium to the Snow 1. Any 1856 cent is rare. The story was that the coin was just misattributed. If Mr. Snow actually said he "paid $9,200 for what easily could be a $20K coin" he must have been caught up in the moment because he is only asking $3,300 more than he paid. He might have been making a general reference to the bidding frenzy that has taken over many high end auctions recently. If he had to bid the coin up to $20,000 he might have had to add $5,000 to the retail price. At least he is not taking advantage of that now.

That 1856 Snow 3 isnt there anymore someone bought it. How nice, to have 11 grand to throw away
