Remember the "So called" 1955 doubled dies? The last 55 looked like it was doubled? What were they really? Die wear. When the devise flows towards the rim and looks distorted, that is die wear.

Happens on dies that are used too long. That happened a lot in the 1953-1955 and even some later dies. Hoe the images help. Note the outside edges/details of the devices. From these you can tell the die were used till they died. (Pun intended)

Mike, I think we both have a similar problem, with the doubling aspect. I have only been at this "variey" thing for about 3 years, and there is a lot that I haven't seen enough of to appreciate the differences very readily. Particularily in the case of the deterioration of the dies. There are several classes of doubling, that I can't name, and don't recognize, when it is pointed out. Maybe I am a slow learner, or my eyes don't see what other see. I found this part of the hobby, and liked irt so much that I became "hooked". No regrets, unless to say I Wish I had gotten into this phase many years ago.
