Ed, Mike, yes, I have those that my dad bought, just before I went into the Navy. All $1.25 cents worth. Still in the book. The "sand-crabs" sure swore by them, because they were getting good wages, working for the government, or some war-related job. Those I had contact with in '43, were wiorking in an aircraft Overhaul, and Re-assembly plant on North Island, in San Diego, CA. Their pay was a lot different than mine. I was an E-3, a thied-class Petty officer., (aircraft mechanic, recip. engines), ( same as the old buck-sargeant. In those days the riutine was to "hit the beach", after work, and chow call. then catch the "nickel-snatcher" over to San diego, walk up Broadway to a liquor store, buy a bottle of Muscatel, sweet wine, and then ride the trolley out to east San Digo to the USO Club, as they called it. Just a dance hall. The jug got stashed in a bush, outside, and I would "tap" it inbetween dances. WhenI got to where I missed a step, I would stop, and tell the girl that I had to go back to the base. Riding the trolley back down to the foot of broadway, where there was an all-night theater. In and watch part of the movie, and sleep there all night. In the morning, catch the nickel-snatcher, back to North Island, eat chow, change clothes, and back to hangar 340. Kurt lives in one of my old stomping-grounds.
