I picked these up from the Niles Coin Shop. The first two are an 1884-O raw. Bag toning $71.

I hope it's NT Smile

NT is natural toning.
AT is artificial toning.

Because Morgans with pretty toning bring a premium many coin docs specialize in enhancing them using heat, chemicals, etc..

Always a touchy subject.

For example if you wrap a bright white 90% silver in a taco bell napkin and let it sit on a window sill they get toned in less than a year. (often sort of golden toning)

They also use chemicals and heat to get rainbow toning.

Sometimes they can even do it in the sealed TPG holders by making a pinhole to add chemicals.

I think some things are cheating but others are not, for example just sitting in the taco bell napkin is borderline, but still it's done to speed up the natural process.

Anyway if you send a rainbow coin to PCGS or NGC they grade it if they think it's NT but if they deem it AT they send it back in a body bag ungraded code 91.

No Grade Description from PCGS
90 Not Genuine
91 Artificial Color
92 Cleaning
93 Planchet Flaw
94 Altered Surfaces
95 Scratch / Rim Dent
96 Refund - No Service
97 Environmental Damage
98 Damage
99 PVC

Ed, I sure wish ANACS would use, or had used this coding, in '05, when I sent my first coin in for attribution. It came back 6 months later, MS-65. They said if I would like it back sooner, to send $8.00. I did not send the additional monet, because I had already sent $132.00 for postage, and handling. I "finally' got back a spotty coin, in a thirty -dollar slab! Talk about geetting ripped-off! I'll never send a coin, anywhere for slabbing. I'll have raw, sunny side up, or scrambled, but not slabbed!

Dick,

My friend thought he had record high grade when he saw on the website his proof graded 99.
Until he realized that meant it was in a body bag for PVC and they keep your grading fee LOL

I had bought a set of P & D rolls of nickels, and a bag of 100 quarters, in 2005, and wanted to put one on ebay. This was before they were released. The 17th of march, I sent the quarter in to ABACS, and marked that It was to be sttributed. (I had no idea what they were going to do, but that is what the form said. It included $12.00 for Postage, and handling. I waited for quite a whle without word of any knd. MyS/son in AZ was sending something, and had called to see how it was coming. he asked about my quarter, as well, and they said it was in the safe. nothing had been done. If I wanted it back, it would cost $8.00, otherwise it would be "early June", before it would arrive. Am I bitter? You better believe it! I keep it well protected, because I don't want anything to happen to my "prescious" slab!

NT = natural toning, duh Rolling Eyes Laughing
But if you look at the second photo, the reverse of the 84-O, you can see something that looks like bag texture marks between the wing on the right (viewers right) and the wreath. I hope its not a Taco Bell napkin. Shocked
