Found this the other day and it scared me, lol. But then I found a 1969-S with extreme machine doubling and it scared me even worse! But this 1999 cent has clear doubling on TOP of the "GOD" lettering and to me does not resemble machine doubling. What do y'all think it is, good double or not?

BTW, here's the 1969-S lol:

Murphy: Looks like the 1969-S is machine doubled. The lower portion looking like steps or as I often refer to as smeared peanut butter. LOL But the other one the 1999 might take a few more images of the other letters/numbers to see what is going on with that one. So if you could give us a few more images that would help.

Ok here's more pics of the 1999 cent. I apologize for the bad quality. I'm having lighting and other problems.

But the "doubling" is only on GOD and the E in WE. There is something weird atop both T's in TRUST, so I zoomed in closer and found a very sharp corner there! Also there are torn places in the copper where you can see the zinc through the tear. The "doubling kinda looks like tears, but I don't see how that can be without seeing zinc there too. Anyway, here's the pics:

Murphy: Thanks for the extra images. I think your coin was affected by pressure strike. The result of machine stretching the dies strike. The mark above the T is from excess heat while striking the coin. I've seen all letters on the outside edge affected. Sorry I don't have an image of it right now. But the effect is similiar to machine doubling in that the strike was affected but the die was normal making the image of the coin slightly distorted. If the die was doubled the result would be all coins made with this die would be doubled. Also something that I noted about your coin is that lack of notches between the doubled image or the enlarging of the numbers. For example:
Notching on the Letters/Numbers:

Widening of the Number/Letters:

So doubled dies can vary as to how the hub is placed into the die. If alignment isn't exact, a doubling or trippling effect can happen. Every coin struck from that die is the same with the same doubling or trippleing. On your coin I didn't see any widening of the letters/numbers. Only on one area was there a mark, but no notching or enlarging took place. I'd save it as an educational piece. Never know when that question will come up again and you have something to show to state your case.

Thanks Coop, I figured as much, but it never hurts to get a second opinion. BTW, you got some nice pics there. Did you buy the 1972DD) or find it? And if you found it, how long did it take you to find it?

Murphy: Bought the 1972P-1MM-002 off Ebay. I'm missing a lot of them still including the big one. Never found a one of them except the common one that is Master die doubling, meaning that all three mints exhibit that type of doubling on part of their dies. Common as Dirt. Die # 5. Nice to look at, but common.

Coop - "die #5" is no longer referred to as such. About two years ago CONECA deleted the die and moved it to a master die listing, MDO #001 or something like that. Anyhow, 1972P DDO#5 was vacant, if not still vacant because of the deletion.

Yeah, and they are also selling Breen listed 1958/7 cents that don't exist...from a 25 year old reference. Some bad things never die.
