I had my last cigarette October 1, 2007 at 9:15pm after 40 years of smoking. I did not realized what I would be going through trying to quit . My wife is a smoker and says she is going to try to quit probably tommorrow .
Sure would help me if she did. I think that if we both quit it would save us about $300.00 a month. I told her that would probably get me about a bag and a half of wheaties each month. I don't think that was the right thing to say. Hope I can stick with this anyway. I am beginning to notice what people smell like that smoke and I can't believe how bad it must have been for those that did not smoke having to be around me. I couldn't tell while I was smoking. I am finding it hard to hold my eye piece steady looking at coins. Kinda got the shakes. Hope that doesn't last to long. I have been eating more and losing weight. Can't figure that one out unless it has something to do with the shakes. I got me some of that nicotine gum. That stuff is like putting a cigarette butt in your mouth but if it helps me quit I'll suffer through it for a while. They say when trying to quit you should have a support group to help get you through it. I stopped at the bank today and got a box of cents. Me and these 2500 Abes are going to have a little discussion now. Take care all.

Well according to the doctors you should be over the physical part of the addiction by now. Its just breaking the habit you have to deal with now. I quit smoking for 20 years just to start up again 6 months ago. I think i am going to quit during the holiday. Good Luck and hang in there Steven

Good luck Steven. You can do it. My Mom quit after 40 years of smoking and I didn't think that was possible. She's been a non-smoker for a few years now and it still amazes me every time I walk into her house -- no more stale smoke smell. 11 days and counting... keep it up. That money (at least your half) is better spent on the hobby (or anything else) anyway.

Stay with it! You will feel better after a few more days and food will taste better. The most important thing is that your health will improve.

I thought about the Chantix but I don't think, because of the warnings, that I would be able to take it. I didn't go to my doctor about the quiting but I don't think he would have advised me taking it. Several of my coworkers used Chantix and it work very well for them. I will plug along here with the gum and see what happens. So far so good.

Steven, I used to chew tobacco, when I first went into the Navy. That had to stop suddenly, because there was no place to spit, and I sure wasn't going to swallow it!. I took up smoking, and went on forabout 25 years. I kept losing my breakfast because of the csughing, and one dayy decided to quit. I had just gotten three backs on the way to work, and when I loost my last meal, I sasid "that is it!", and gave the smokes to a co-worker. I quit "cold turkey", and it was tough for a few days, but being as hard-headed as I am, it has lasted to this day. I quit in '68. Just don't replace the "habit" with something that will make you gain a lot of weight! good luck, and better health,
Dick

Jeanie and I cold turkeyed smoking about 10 years ago AT THE SAME TIME. Not advisable, however, it proved that we loved each other for we are together today (LOL).
Good going Steven.
The hardest part is yet to come though and that is the time that you think you have it beat (about three to six months after you quit) and to test yourself, you lite a cigarette up. Don't do it.

Well it has been two months now without a cigarette. Just as stressfull as the first day though. I sure hope the strong urges go away before too long.
With the wife quiting as well has sure helped. I don't think I would have made it this far if she hadn't.

Congrats Steven. My dad quit smoking about 10 years ago, and he did cold turkey. Hopefully, the next 2 months will not be as hard as the first 2...

Been a year no smoking. Still want one. Sometimes pretty bad urges. I didn't think last Oct. 1 that I would be able to do it. Still hanging in there though.

Steven, feel good about yourself! It isn't easy! My wife has just gone 10 months withput a smoke! It hasn't been easy for her. she is pretty tough, and has had a few times when she had to fight real hard, but she is still hanging in there, and I hope you go the same. BTW, don't worry about gaining a few pounds. It will go away a lot easier that the addiction to nocotine!

Matt, If one wants something bad enough to suffer the consequences, then one will do it! Congratulations on a year! I'll be looking for my wife's first year, in January. good luck to you both!
