2009 cents

I read in Coin World today (Oct. 11 issue) legislation is being considered for new designs for the Lincoln cent. The obverse would remain the same but the reverse would reflect Lincoln at various stages in his life. 4 reverse's would be issued at 3 month intervals.
"The legislation would also authorize the issuance of 2009 Lincoln cents to be struck with the exact metallic content as the 1-cent coin contained in 1909 in such numbers as the (Treasury) secretary determines to be appropriate for numismatic purposes."
And to think there was a time people were discouraged from collecting. I am curious about the cent made in the exact metallic content in numbers appropriate for numismatic purposes. I wonder what the mintages will be and how it will be marketed.

As a Lithuanian I have to say I like the obv. Not to many famous/almost famous Lithuanians around.

I hate to think they are putting four reverses on the cent in 2009. One interesting thing I did hear about it in the Sept 27 issue, I think, was that they were going back to the same metal composition and same relief from 1909 on the coin, that was interesting. It think they will have to retool the presses to do that. But Im glad, after the junk they have been putting out in the past few years. Maybe they should go back to the wheat reverse. God these quarters that have multiple themes are awful. South Carolina, Florida, etc. At least Arnold had the good sense to put one single theme on the California quarter.

Coop, did you design that obverse?

First I would like to agree on the metal composition. I think it strange also with all the quarter designs. As far as Ah-Nold and the California design it is my understanding there was a non binding vote in which the Sierra club design was chosen with 5% of the popular vote compared to a losing design which received 21% of the vote. Some clubs have great influence I guess. We did learn a few years ago popular vote means absolutely nothing.

well the original stipulation on the quarter program was that the governor had the final say. Do you really want to discuss the theory of popular vote vs. the Electoral College?

As I stated non binding. I understand how the system works. It just makes me wonder why they posed the question in California. I could see if there were 2 or 3 designs within 5% of each other but this is not the same.
People did elect him and this is his right so God bless.

I think the whole statehood quarter program was a bust to begin with...since the first designs came out in 1999 WITHOUT credit to the artist who made the design, the coins bear the initials of the mint engraver who finalized the design...UNLIKE the bicentennial coins.

This is why I never submitted any of the designs I created.

That is the inteesting question, why aren't the designers getting any credit for the designs? I am sure this experience will affect the design submissions for the cent if such a program is established.

Most of it has to do with the fact that the designs were vastly submitted in 2D form and someone had to raise them into relief. The mint considers that work the engraver's work, not the artist's work....which I think is a bunch of crap.

I believe Daniel Carr submitted some 3-D virtual designs for the state quarter program. There may have been some controversy over the format and if they would accept them. I think he eventually design one that was used but like you said no credit was given at the time. A real shame.

Garry: On the 2009-D/S Cent I posted. It was part of a painting that I edited to make it look like a drawing. I thought Abe should turn around to see his collectors. LOL

In my humble opinion, they should just go back to the original 1909 design for 2009, wheat reverse, relief, copper and all. I like red wheat cents, what can I say. Why does it have to be so complicated?, 4 reverses? how weird is this going to get? I wonder how much overhead and labor the Mint has added because of these commemorative quarter and nickel programs and God forbid, the dollar program.
