Back in the late 70's - when I was a teen - we moved to the property of a (very) senior citizen from our church who was moving to a nursing home. Her offspring came and took the personal items and things they thought were of value - and the remaining items they left to us. When we moved in, the house, basement, barn, and and garage were still full of neat old stuff. We found a box of 1930's & 40's Life magazines, antique toys, furniture, farming tools, a wedding photo of my Dad and his X (my mom didn't like that), etc. We didn't find a stash of cash or coins -- but that was always the hope.

I always wonder how much cool stuff is hidden, lost and forgotten in an old property. As an adult, I've lived in several old properties I've always dreamt of finding some lost stash hidden away somewhere.

Here is a link to a story I saw on another forum. A contractor remodeling a bathroom made a 'find of a lifetime' - $182,000 in depression era currency stashed in a wall. Then greed stepped in and ruined everything. It is a pretty interesting story...

So what is the lesson learned in this story?

They should have split it themself!

I wonder how many hoards like that don't get found and end up in the dump when the house is torn down. Maybe the house demolition guys find some.

It PAYS to keep the MOUTH shut!!!
Some people never learn. You would be in a lot more trouble in Mexico, or most any other country, under the same circumstances, if you found ,and even tried to split with anyone! Everything belongs to the "state"! Florida is a ggood exaple.

I just noticed that eagames already posted this link in another area. Sorry about that.

Besides the obvious lessons, one thing I learned was...

If you happen to find $182,000 depression era money - hope that you find it in cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars, and silver dollars. Even $1, $2, $5, and $10 dollar bills would have been better than the denominations reported in this discovery (mostly large bills). Considering the current value over face value, depression era $500 and $1000 bills have a tiny premium compared to even common date coins from the same period. If the hoard had been discovered in BU rolls -- the $182K in face value would have been worth millions.
