I haven't been looking through coins much lately (though I did find a 1970S small date from change!!) but came across this Virginia quarter with an unusual color. It looks golden or brassy, but it is only on the reverse side. The edge of the coin does not have a definite clad layeron the reverse side, though under the microscope it appears to have a thin layer of something. The pictures aren't the best but give some idea of what I am talking about. Any ideas?

It could be missing the clad layer. Those need to be seen by an error expert or sent in for authentication by a third party grading service.

Just weigh the coin with a gram scale. If it comes out significantly underweight, then it's probably struck missing a layer. That's the easiest way to be relatively certain.

I have a question in this regard. I have seen several with a very dull "finish", that I thiught were missing a clad layer, but they were NOT copper colored. What would you attribute the obvious difference to?

I have a few that have a russet color to them. I think some people dip them in acid to remove the clad layer just for fun or to try and fool someone.

Garryn, Thanks. I still have a bunch of them that showed up when I was searching quarter rolls for the ststes series. I just put the "odd ones" in a flip, and stashed them with the others. Not in the solid date-roll set.
