These are from the single squeeze process, unlike the 1955-D. Seem more like the center area or above seem to be affected from what ever causes them. Hub movement during the process with a snap into position is what most call it. Or it could be from a partial strike and a re positioning of the hub into the die. The deeper devices would not be eliminated in the center somehow like the bars on the Memorial Cent reverse. So, I think the jury is still out on these doubled dies yet.

Coop,
I think 84 is a year that might or might not have had all or any dies made using single sqeeze.
Not sure if dimes were changed at a different year.
Do you know what year single squeeze was started for dimes?

I have heard of "eyes in the back of the head", but not in the cheek! Looks a bit like the eye of a toad. I would "assume", (and that is not the best position, in many cases), that all denominationd would have been chabged at a more-or-less same time, for econimical reasons. I know of nothing concrete.
Maybe Mike Diamond might have a comment.

On the dime.... Most of that is the normal design, the way they designed the eye on dimes looks funny if I look close LOL
I think single squeeze die making at US mints for cents was started around 84-86 and wasn't done all at once (it took about 10 years) and wasn't used on all cent dies until around 1997.
Don't know if dime die making was changed to single squeeze at the same time.

With the amount of heavy die flow almost over the devices, I would say extreme die wear on the 9. On the 4 it looks like a crack starting to happen. Just the indication of a very tired VLDS die. What I always find interesting is to compare the reverse. Sometimes they look just as bad or have been replaced with another die that doesn't look as bad. No extra value, just impute for my eye to examine.

One more look, than I'll give up. There seems to be a split serif on croslet of 4 and top of 4 all along left side? Also top and bottom. I do not have an arrow on bottom or top, but you can pretty much see it between the top & bottom 2 arrows.

The die flow lines are stronger than the notch you are pointing at. Makes me think it is just more die flow lines rearing their ugly head. Worn dies can make you think their is something there when there really wasn't from the EDS coins.

Very interesting looking nickel. I pretty much know nothing of the series, but I think that it is worth investigating a bit. I think that it might be a DDO.
