When I first saw this one in the mint set, I thought it was just a nasty case of post strike contact damage. I was a little ticked off that a set I bought had such a junky coin. Upon closer inspection, it looks like this is struck through something (in 3 locations) - probably wire fragments.
Knowing the cause does not make it look any more appealing. But I'll take it. A lot of mint error coins are ugly coins, anyway.

I've found cents with similar struck throughs, maybe they're wire brush bristles?

Ken, Ed, I believe they are wires from the polishing wheels on the grinders. I have a proof set, '81, with a struck thru on the dime.. i have another that looks like avery strong curly hair. It has to be a piece of coiled wire, or maybe shavings.

I did a little eBay searching to see if I could come up with some sort of value for this type of error. I found lots of the common 'struck thru grease' listings and a few listings for struck through some more substatial object. Lot so high prices, but not much selling.
One guy has this very coin (a 2007 P John Adams dollar) also struck thru wire. It is nearly the exact same size and location as the larger mark on my coin. Asking Price: $6000. Yes - his is PCGS certified MS68 - but give me a break. It has not sold - and probably would not sell even at 1 percent of that price.
I did find a strike through I kind of liked. Here is the link...

It looks pretty cool - but $60 is more than I would want to pay for it.
