"Found in Rolls"

I know of a few die variety hunters that only search BU rolls. I wish I could afford such a luxury -- but even if I could, there is a certain element of fun searching circulated rolls bought at face value. Dismissing the 'road kill', corroded, acid experiments, counting machine damage, and just plain worn out coins as coming with the territory, searching circulated rolls occasionally yields unexpected surprises - even beyond error coins and die varieties. Most such finds are pretty much worthless – but some can be kind of fun.

Occasionally you find silver, and every once in a while you find a nice oldie (like a 1919 D 1c recently found in a roll). I’ve found a proof coin or two, and sometimes there is the colorized quarter placed into circulation (my daughter likes those). The other day, I found a darkened Vermont Quarter. I don’t know what cause it – but I thought it kind of a neat effect. It almost went in the junk pile – but I decided to shoot a photo first.

I have always liked this design. It is simple - has one topic - and just plain represents the state like few other designs do. And the 'antique look' on this circulated roll find added a little unexpected variety to my roll searching.

What oddities have you found in your roll searching?

I did get an Az-D quarter in change that was nice enough to put in my folder Smile

Went thru 20 rolls from the bank, today. Several AZ-D, Washington-P, some NM-D, and one AK-D in change. Finally completed one folder, with the Washington-P. There were only five in the 20 rolls: two "P", three "D". I am down to the many "P" states, '7, and '08. Been looking for that Wash.-"P", for months! hope you guys have been lucky, too.

Hi Dick,

If you tell me which ones you are looking for, I could probably find them in a couple of days. The P mint quarters are about all we have here.

Hi Chuck, good morning! I got lucky and found two "P" washington quarters, and filled the hole for it. The only ones I need now are NM, AZ, Alaska, and Hawaii, but I'm not sure if it has come out yet. Need any "D"s? How much od a cross-section of the mints did you have in MO?

Missouri is almost all D mint. I see a few P mint coins here and there, but not very often.

South Florida is all P mint. I don't see many D mint coins.

Only place I've spent any time where there's actually a decent mix is Memphis, Tennessee. It's about 50-50 most of the time.

Hi chuck, That surprises me a bit. That is the last place I would expect a good mix. They are, where you find them, I guess. Moving back to Missouri, in the dead of winter is not the perfect time for such a move, but when circumstances dictate, why wait? Just keep your 'long-handlad-drawers" handy. You will need them!

Dick - to help you out in understanding why you should expect a good mix just East of the Mississippi, you might like to know that the Fed Reserve bank branches West of the Mississippi carry D mint coins, and those East of the Mississippi carry P mint coins. Little Rock and St. Louis are D mint. Nashville and Birmingham are P mint. All four deliver to Memphis.

Up in my latitude you don't hit solid P mint coins until you hit the Indiana state line. Illinois is chiefly D mint because they get their deliveries from St. Louis. Northern Illinois gets their deliveries from Chicago, which mostly gets P mint.

Oddities exist, such as Wisconsin getting mostly D mint and Minnesota getting mostly P mint. The panhandle of Florida gets a lot of D mint...but generally the rule goes that you'll get P or D mint depending on which side of the Mississippi you are located.

The strangest mix I saw was...

At a local BM a lady came in with 4 $25 boxes of 1980 cents.
They were tight OBW rolls, only one box was open.

She thought the dealer would pay a premium but they said they didn't want them. I know the dealer and was standing in the shop so he said to ask me if I'd give any premium.

I said sure, I'll give $30 a box so I'm paying $5 a box to search them for 1980 DDOs. The lady said great and I took all 4 boxes.

I was amazed when I searched them, every roll was mixed about 50% P and D but all BU 1980 OBWs.

No DDOs but there were several of the delisted D/S.

Never seen a mix like that in OBWs. Rolling Eyes

Chuck, good morning, (well afternoon here, too, now)! tghanks dor the info re the difference in the distribution of the coins. I didn't know the "mighty MO" was the line of demarkation, so to speaak. Looks like Memphis, and West Memphis would be a good place for a collector. We used to see a lot of "S" hers, but I giuess the collectors have Pulled" them. I save all the "S" mint coins I get. Dopn't ask me why. It has always been a habit.

Ed, tyhat was a good "buy" whether you dfound any DDO's or not. The box will just about give the $5.00 back in melt value/box.
BYI, I tyried two AAA batteries in the camera, to see if they fit, and , yes, and it operates, as well. I buy AAA' by the large pack from Home Depot, because I use so many. they have always been good, long life.
