Could it be the beginning of the dd process?

Thanks
Mike

Doubled dies don't form over die use, they're made when the die is hubbed.

That one is the master die doubled one. You can find this on all three mints. Look at the B on LIBERTY. But it is very common. Worth melt or what it is marked on the reverse.

This might help:

An explanation: Wink

They make dies from a hub.

Doubled dies are made if they hub it more than once with sep between hubbings.

For 1972 there's 9 or 10 working dies that had doubling and are collected. They don't start out with minor spread then grow, they start out with a certain spread and stay that way.

There can be ones where the master was doubled so they use that master to make several working hubs and they get made with the same doubling. Then the dies made by those hubs all have the same doubling. In 1972 that happened, many dies got made with that "master doubling".

Since there are many dies made that way and they sent them to all 3 mints you can find these from all mints and from several dies from each mint. So they have some "master doubling" but it has no extra value because there's so many of them and it's minor so they aren't rare and have no added value.

When the doubled dies were documented for 1972 these were first called "DDO die-5" but when they realized there were many dies and it was from "master doubling" they delisted that "die-5" and called it MDO-001 and eventualy they listed a different one as "die-5" (that adds to confusion!).

So your coin is the 1972-P MDO-001 (not one of the 10 different doubled dies) and they're easy to find. If you get a few 72 rolls you can easily fill a full roll of these.

Notice in the Coneca listings it's MDO-001 then they list DDO-001 through DDO-010 then they list MDO-001 again because it shows up on D mint coins then they list the 5 D mint DDOs then again they list MDO-001 because it shows up on S mint coins.

(hopefully I termed that right, die making is confusing to me)

Ed, I believe you termed it right, at least from what I have read in the "Plaid Book", and also from a series of articles in CCN, (Canadian Coin News), entitled Errors, and varieties, by John Regitko. He is quite well read, and widely known in Canada. Those of you who collect Canadian coins, no doubt have heard of him. with photos, examples, and illustrations, he very amply explains "what Happened".

Umm, yeah...there is no 'process' to doubled dies. They either have doubling or they don't before they are hung on the press for use.
