Regular coin VS Variety

An interesting thing happened to me today on ebay. I have been looking to upgrade my Indian Cent collection and have bid on several 1867 coins in the past month in the F/VF grade range but did not win any as most went 80-100 dollars. (I'm kinda cheap!) Check out this coin I won today http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370128202273
Listed as a VF (I'll know for sure when I get it), but I was the ONLY bidder. Were others scared off because this was listed as a variety?
I guess my point is that a VF 1867 is normally worth more the 69 bucks, so why no interest???!?!?!

P.S. Now I have both 1867's listed in Cherrypickers, so I am very happy with my purchase....

Might be that bidders expect it costs more so if they don't collect varieties they avoided it.

Well, I'm glad they avoided it !!!
I was also wondering about the "bid" factor.
If a coin starts at a dollar then more folks get involved and keep bidding, as opposed to making that first bid of a subatantial amount??
Anxious to see the coin..

I think you're right CoinboyJay. I bid on ebay all the time and I am more likely to start bidding and chase something if it starts at a lower min bid. When they start high like that I shy away and assume they will end at some outrageous amount and forget about them. Just harder to make that early, high bid commitment than work my way up. Hope yours turns out OK. If so, nice buy!

Coinboyjay, there is merit in what you say. I used to bid, and started at the minimum, and watched it go out of sight, then lost it! later I say on it until the last few seconds, (if I really wanted it, at that price), then I bid, and usually won. I soon found out there are "shills" out there that will "sucker" one in, until they think he might "get away", and then they drop it at thr next bid! As I said, a bird in the hand is worth more than two in the bush, and by thay I mean, if you want what is offered, look at the
"buy it now", items. If you like the price, go ahead and buy it! At least you know what it will cost you, and not end up being out-bid at the last minute!

I would say you did very well for $69! The coin looks a solid VF30, if not better. Perhaps you simply were at the right place at the right time? Congrats!

It looks better than it looked on ebay.

Maybe if the seller had it graded or if he had better pics and close ups of the RPD it might have got more attention.
