Found the pic of Aunt Dot, she was about 18 & me with my first bike at about 18. Her bike was much nicer than mine! They still used to race on Daytona Beach back then, she lived in Jacksonville & used to go down there. My payment was only 15.00 a month! "The good ole days" OK 1 more (please indulge me in my other passion Rolling Eyes This is my 1959 BSA 650 A-10, Had the whole motor rebuilt, been working on it about 4 years! Lucky my husband has a lathe & is a mechanic! You just can't buy parts for these. It doesn't look like much now, but it will be a beauty....OK 2 more, the one I ride now Rolling Eyes
Thanks Cool

0Tery, is that last one, (the one you ride now) a four-banger"?
I am not a "Biker", never had, or developed a desire to have one, but they are very popular, and needless to say, get fantastic gas milage!. I am one who believes there should always be two engines, on an aircraft, and four wheels on the ground, in a car.
But the choice is up to the individual, and I say, "To each, his own"! Enjioy your passion, I do!

ED, I meant in ANY "bird"! I'll say this about the "Yoke-boats", I never had a "single engine" experience, in the time I flew them, (training in JAX, Fla). After we finished our training, we were told we were to be replacements for the "Black-Cat Squadron". All but five crews did go there, and of the five who did not, two went to Whidby Island, WA, for "Hot-Wing" school, and three went to A&R, On North Island, San doego, CA. Assembly, And Repair drafted 500 personnel from "Fleet Air". My crew was one of the three. that was in Nov.,'44. It took me until July, '45 to figure a way to get out of there! We were sitting in Enewitok Harbor, as part of the invasion force of the "Home Islands", along with 1800 Marines, when Japan surrendered, I subsequently went to Guam for two years. Being a trained "Combat- air-crew member", I was drawing flight pay. I flew four hours a month, to keep my status, and drove truck(s), and any other motor vehivle for two years, while also receiving a half set of "flight-skins", a month!

Ed, While we were there in JAX, we got several pilots from Ricife, Brazil, as advanced training proceeded. Thet had been flying thr %A, wjhich are amphibius, and could land on a runway. We had to attach side gear, to beach the plane(s). during thea time, I, being a mechanic, had a lot of the knowledge needed for the cruising and power requirements for the different conditions. We "Mechs", were also allowed to learn the take-off, and landing procedures, in case one or all the pilots were disabled, we couild bring the plane down. I flew many 'bounce hops at night, and when we went to Cuba, (Gitmo Bay, for some Lucky Strikes, and Nylon Hose), we also had 15 people aboard. Five more than normal. The officers got what they wanted, and we then got ready to return to Jacksonvill, Fla., The plane was so over-loaded, with people, and "goodies", we had trouble getting airbotne. the first take-off run was aborted when we saw we were too close to the anti-sub nets, and the mines attached. Going back as far as we could, we put the til on the beach, and poured the power on! We cleared the nets by a few feet! On the way back notrth, I flew for several hours, and then the pilots took over. The Radioman said that we had been reporetd over-due, and the squadron had been sent ous on a search, and rescue mission. Not too far out of Jax, we met with onwe of the search aircraft, and they reported we were okay, and in-bound. When we went uyp the St. Johns river to the ramp at the base, all the other aircraft that were qwaterboune, were circling, (normal procedure, while awaiting their turn to beach the plane). We were given priority and went directly to the ramp buoy, after that, it was just another bweaching, but the Nylons, must have been a very good deal, and the cigarettes were sealed in wax and cost 50 cents a carton.
Since then, I have flown the Martin Marlins for ten years, and, (as a radio operator. and ASW Platform operator). Being schooled as an aircraft mechanic, and also had extensive training as an Aviation Electronics Technician, I was p[retty well at home in any area of the plane, and flying. Yes, I flew them too, and would do it again, (if they would lower the physical requirements, just a little bit). These planes were like the Yoke-boats, in that they had to have "beaching-gear attached to beach the aircraft. Good thing we are in the "gossip column, or the y would say I hi-jacked the thread!

Sorry Dick, Guess I highjacked your post! My mom's mom was born in Baker County Fl, right near the St. John's River. Did alot of research, took about 5 years (just to find her parent's names!), as she was disowned for marrying a yankee. That side goes back to Spanish Fl. Only was able to get to 1800....before that?

Dick
Hijacked or not, I'm enjoying reading a little bit of history that is not in the "books".

Teryble
My uncle traced our family back in the 1500's in Germany( father side)
I've got back to the early 1800's on Mom's side from Ireland.

Iv'e always enjoyed history, especially local history.

My property was given to a Lt. Valentine by George Rogers Clark for his service. now I own 2 acres of it.

The yankee side was Flynn, Irish of course. I only got back to 1860 census in N.J. The census only stated Northern Ireland. So I'm stuck there. Alot of the info I got hand written from a distant cousin who writes a column for the historical society of Baker County, called "The way it was" He actually sent me copies of his own research. Davis/Altman was my Fl families. Later they moved on to Polk Co. Fl Where there are ALOT of Altmans, especially ALtman Chevrolet, but cannot tie it all together....

Tery, My brother is the Historian in our family. He also is the "money-bags" of the family. He takes after an Aunt. Romayne, My dad's sister was in Realestate, and became 'fiklthy rich". She got the idea from my grandfather, her dad. There were three siblings, My dad, Romayne, and Harold. He retired from the AS&SF, many years ago, in San Bernardino, CA, (very close-by. 6,or 8 miles) My Dad also retired AT&SF RY, was a telegrapher. They used the "Continental Morse code, (it uses spaces in some of the letters). Booth were "poor folks". My Aunt was thr "Rich-Bitch". The story actually began in 1900, when my Grand-dad was in Alaska, and struck it rich. Dad was born while he was there. Grand-dad then invested in a fruit, and nut orchard in Merced, CA. Later a flood wiped him out!, (the Merced River). He then went into Realestate, and was said to have "owned half of Riverside,Ca, and had a lease on the rest". Dads mother died, (as near as I can remember) shortly after, or maybe during he was born. Grand-dad remarried, with a woman with four children. At the time of his passing, he had $90.000 in the bank, amnd a lot of properties. May, (the step-mother), said she will keep the properties, and the money could be devided among the grand-kids. There were three of Romaynes, one of Harolds, and four of us. Romayne sdaid, "you kids have been taken care of"! Oh Yes! She retired and lived in Laguna Nigel, where the movie stars, and very wealthy live. When she made out her will, the told the three boys "You can fight over it"! The oldest was a Maintenance mechanic for Sunkist, in Corona, ans I at that time also worked for sunkist, but in Ontario, Ca. I was a mechanic, at first, and then became a leadman machinist. Shortly after I went to work for Kaiser steel, as a millwright. He retired and is still there in corona. The youngest Owns a Jaguar Dealership in San Jose, Ca. the middle son, was drafted into the Army ion WWII, and came back a "mental case". he had a mental break-down, and never recovered. Harold had a daughter, Jean. She married inot a little money, and moved to Hemet, CA. All of the four of us siblings, (Iam the oldest), are younger than any of the rest, so we are still around. The rest? Anybodys guess! I don't worry about "shirt-tail relations"! Dad was making a "decent wage", (for the times), and bought 42 acres of land with tho houses, and a barn , three wells, and about 22 acres of cultivated land. The rest was a hill behind the house, thet was only good for grazing. He paid $2700.00 for it. that was in 1940. I lived there almost three years, befdore going into the NAvy. My kid-brother, (10 years younger), spent most of his life there, and was very attached to the place. After dad died, he left the property to mom, and upon her death, the property was to be sold, and devided equally among the four kids. Said, and done. By Brother is a retired gov't worker, and had decided to take his pension, "lump-sum" so he could invest it as he chose. I knew he wanted the "old homstead", and I told him, if he has the wat to do it, he has my blessings. I have no "fond memories" of that place, and could care less about who buys it. I told him, "if you have the momney, go for it"! He managed to cover all expenses, and now owns the property. (As I said, he takes after His Aunt, in ht e money world. (He is so tight, he wouldn't buy a tamale, because he can't eat the corn-husk it's wrapped in)! I wonder how he is going to take it with him when he dies..... gotta take a "map-search break, be back.
later:
The family came from Germany, in the early 1800's. three sisters, named Schnidt. Later one of them met, and married my grand-father. The other two were, old maids, to the very last.

Now for the "today" scenario! We went to out oldest daughters house for a family dinner, and got the shock of our lives! Our younger grand-son, has a hog. So he wants to be able to ride around with his brotheer. Yes, he has a bike, too. He is an Industrial Archetech, and builds water treatment plants, to extract the Perchchlorates from the wells in the area. They all have been contaminated by the manudfacturers of Rocket fuels, many years ago. He, the oldest grand-son came by the house and had this bike. When the dinner was over, his brother brought out his bike, and was getting ready to return to San Diego. His two buddies, both with bikes, followed suit. The the oldest great grand-son brought out HIS bike. I thought "holy crap! Well it wasn't over, yet! The two younger great-grand-sons brought out their bikes. They knew I didn't care too much about bikes, etc, so they had hidden them in the garage! Oh well, kids will be kids, and if they are big enough, and that is what they want to do, so be it! I now have 6 bikers in my family. At least I KNOW these "bikers"! "Mama", so far hasn't gotten the nerve, but knowing her, "One of these days......"!
