Was this coin held in a good luck holder and removed with a 1996 Cent? The two different dates look like a sure tampered coin. Even if the coin was struck twice the two different dates would make it a post mint tamper.

dpb, IThank you for posting the extra pictures. I can see it is "double-struck", but it just doesn't look right! I can't put my finger on it, but the areas att K2, and K8, on the OBV, and also the REV don't look right. My eyes don't pick up the details, as do others, but the over-all coins appearance seems to have been tampered with. maybe coop can hit "the nail on the head"! Kurt has some doubts, too, it seems.

Looks like a struck coin from 1996 broadstruck by a 1999 die. It looks legit, has to be struck twice by two separate die pairs.
I've always been told these sorts of things are impossible, so I would be very skeptical before being very excited. This is something that needs authentication. If authenticated, it's a big story for sure.

Coop, that is what was bothering me! The "6", at K2. i kept thing how could the "9" get resversed, and the rst of the date be the same? "U.S. Garage Mint product.

The coin is on it's way to pcgs.
I've collected these for a number of years now and purchased enough garage coins to have a pretty good handle on what's real and what's not. I'm 98% on this one being legit unless there's fake '99 dies out there and I haven't heard of any. The partial collar makes sense because a struck coin would be a very tight fit in the collar. It's uniformity suggests a deliberate act to me but that's something we'll never know.
Tried doing some research on overstrikes and found very little to go on.
I'll update you when it comes back even if it's in a bodybag

This is a genuine error and there's no reason to suspect it was assisted in any way. A number of dual date double strikes are known with several years separating the two strikes. It's likely that a 1996 cent accidentally fell into (or was intentionally placed within) a shipment of planchets from the Mint's outside supplier.

I am certainly not the expert Mr. Diamond is, but I agree with coop and CD. 1996 to 1999 to big a spread (time wise) for a genuine mint error. In fact I could make a similar coin with 2 coins and a hammer.........
As mentioned before, a HUGE story if real........

Honestly, I'd like to see a "garage job" identical to what is shown above. I personally don't think it's possible.

Looks like we are going to have to wait for the arrival of the "body-bag", or an official confirmation that it is genuine.
My money goes on the former, rather than the latter, if only from the point, that I just don't see "how they did it"!

Hey did you guys see that PCGS stopped doing body bags?
It starts that way as of Dec 1st.
Now they grade cleaned or damaged coins and holder it in a "genuine" holder at no extra charge but don't put a numeric grade on them.
The only body bags are if it's not genuine.
They offered that "genuine" service before but you had to pay a huge fee. Now it's the default service for PCGS.

This coin is a hard one to call, it's either an encapsulated lucky cent that got a second image and date from a soft die or a very rare error. Hopefully it turns out as an error.
