I don't hink this was all from the same hit. It seems more like three hits in the directions that you arrows are in. They could be bag marks with other coins in the bag, or just random circulation that damaged them. It could even be die movement from the striking. Hard to say. There is also a mark on the upper right part of the R as well. What ever it is it's of no extra value for the coin. Just worth it is marked on the reverse: ONE CENT.

Thanks Coop
Like the song by Styx "Got to much time on my hands"
Of course when I look at a coin, I don't sepreate my coins(which I probably should by date)
I just open a roll, seperate the old from the new(85 being the sepertion date) don't ask me why, I just picked it out of the blue
then I look at them.
I'm sure there is a better system, and I'm open for suggestions
Mike

Mike,
For me the best system is:
Get yourself a hoard of plastic cent tubes, sometimes a coin shop will even sell used ones for cheap. I also look for when they sell tubes, if the box is nearly empty I ask if I buy the last dozen or whatever if I can have the box. The boxes have foam that sort of holds the tubes so you can keep them in order. I glued stiff cardboard to the bottoms to make the boxes stronger.
Start filling those tubes, if they overflow keep the best coins and spend the worst but double check them before putting them in the spend pile. After many years I made several nice roll sets of memorials, sometimes if I got OBWs I dumped the ugly ones after a good search and kept the uncs.
Then over time you end up with roll sets and when you read of a variety you can search the roll of that year/MM. Searching works best if you do it with solid rolls so you can look up what exists for that coin and look for them. It also helps you because some years look strange but if you have a solid roll you see what "aint like the others".

I'll see if I can get over to Louisville, Ky. to the numastics place and see if they'll help me out. if not the next closes place is cincinnatti, ohio or indiannapolis, in.
Big problem when you live next to nothing close to nowhere

Mike, I wrote a bit about what I do, and when I went for the photo, to post, the "disertation", was gone! Here is how I go about it:
TYhese are square tubes, and run about $35.00, for a box of 100. They can be pirchased on line. There are several places . Look under tubes, square, etc.
If you want a bit more info re my method, just ask, and I'll tell you. It is fast for sorting, and very convenient for searching.

I agree with that.
It looks like after strike it bounced as it ejected and damaged it against the die. Above the T going towards the rim is die wear.

Either that, or due to the sharp change in the surface, movement during the strike, the thin clad layer gave way, and left the zinc exposed. I see a lot of those coins, and they get tossed.

Ed, I just assumed, from the picture, that it was a zincoln.
Mike, just for kicks, is it an 82, or later?

Mike,
You can see from the three boxes, that there are 90 tubes. that says you will run out of coins to sort before you run out of tubes to fill! You will, however find that the late 40', and 50's will fill faster than others. I use the three tubes on the 50's, (1959, which are Memorials for 20' , teens, and 30's. the 56-s57-S, and 58-S are niot used, so they are used for peplacement tubes for the full one needed. remember also, you have ten extra tubes , when needed. I go thru more than one box, and don't fill more than a few tubes.
If I only have a few rolls, (less than a box of 50 rolls), I do it a bit differently, but use the samre technique. You can see the "K", "9", and "8", on the front box That tells you the MM's are not sorted out, yet.
Using the boxes the tubes came in, it is easy to make the date, and mint distinction, and there will be ten spares, plus. These are the tubes that are NOT full yet, and into which thesorting leftovers go into.
This system differe from Chuck's system, or method, and due to my vision problem, works better for me, in that I know where each slot is, and can place them correctly. Now, I do "set aside", certain coins when sorting,if my attention is drawn to them for whatever reason, and chekck them after the box, or "lot' is sorted.
All mt US cents are sorted out this way, and the Canadian cents are sorted, and divided by varities, as well. For example, there are six 2006 varieties, and so there are six tubes in that date series. Same for the '48, 49. '53', '65, etc, with the varieties. this is easy, due to the MM situation, which is not opresent with them, as it is here. not to mention that the Canadian "small cents, begin in 1920, as opposed to our cent, starting in '09. There is plenty room for all of them in two boxes.
The three boxes for the US cents are devided into , roughly two boxes for the wheats, and one for the memorials. The '82's are lined up, all 7 varieties, in seven tubes, etc.. All the rest are in rolls, (SDR), and in decade marked boxes. There are 40-50 of those boxes. It goes without saying, there are a LOT of un-searched coins there!
Hope this helps!
Dick

About a year ago I decided to not spend anything that's unc and red so when moderns overflow I put them in a jar.
When memorials are obsolete and the circ ones are dissolving they might be worthwhile. I wish I did that as a kid, I was finding wheats to fill a folder back when there were lots of them and if I already had the date I spent the rest. Now I wish I kept them. LOL.
