Others might not agree but I think its:

Imagine the reverse die, it's a mirror image of the coin. The bays are higher than the pillars. (it's reversed)

Then imagine they polish it and it wears.... the highest corners polish away first. Since it's mirrored reversed the corners that were worn or polished become those filled in corners in the bays on the coin.
Keep thinking of the die being opposite of the coin, whatevers sunk is raised so bays are raised and pillars sunk. When they polish it takes the highest corner off the die which becomes the deepest part of the coin.

There are similar listed ones that are either doubled dies or master doubling but I think this is not.

The rest of what you see is in the plating being torn or moved or wear and damage on the dies from clashes or normal use.

Dick,

Don't see it on the planters.

There's some polish lines (vert in the bays) so it might have been clashed and polished.

Memorial reverses drive me nutty, they often have little things if I look too close. I ignore most things like bars unless they're big or have other doubling. I'm still hoping to find that juicy 1982 DDR. ; )

Ed, check the top of the right side on picture one. I see s dividion in the "bright area, that would indicate a separation. Maybe mike could get us a close-up of that planter? About that "juicy '82 DDR, yep!, Aren't we all!

Dick,

In the other pic without the light spot it looks more like a small hit on the corner.

Smile

Ed, sounds good to me. I can't see that close, so you will have to "do my looking", Okay? Laughing
