I came across this coin today in change back from the store.
What is the raised straight line going under the letters ?

It is indeed a gouge of some sort. Many have said that these types of marks come from feeder finger damage, but I just don't know for sure.

How about a struck through???
Something stiff enough not to go into the recessed area of the letters on the die??

It's a die gouge or a long, thin die dent. I can't say what caused it.
