I found a penny that looks like a button or bottle cap.
it has the reverse of the Lincoln memorial the nickel looks like the face of the 1991 nickel with mint mark.
you know the i voted buttons with the lamination on the front and the stick pin on the back and they are made of metal. well it looks like what that would if you took off the lamination and the pin and just left the hollow button part.
is this an error or is this after mint?
They both belong to my girlfriend's grandmother.

hehe i forgot the 's after girlfriend lol the only way i can get a picture is with my camera phone and that is going to look crappy the coin has what looks like a full rim so it is the same width as a normal penny it is the same diameter and a pretty normal reverse .
the key thing is is that it looks like someone took a spoon and took out the insides and the obverse side of the coin it has a steel like smooth surface on the inside
imagine an orange. the edible part the actual fruit is the core like the zinc core of a penny the skin would be like the clad layer. now think of someone cutting along the inside rim edge of the obverse and taking of Lincolns face then pop out the orange and the back is all that is left
I'm going to try to get a picture when i go back over there.

From what you said I'm not sure how the 5c face could fit since the cent is smaller.

It sounds like a hollowed out zinc cent, I've seen some that look flat inside. For magic tricks they might even put a cut down 5c or 10c in it or a 2 headed or 2 tailed cent. They make them for tricks or a place to hide something small.

Here's a hollowed out copper cent, some have a thin smooth disc inside that hides the lathe lines.

the nickel and penny are 2 separate finds at different times the one you have a picture of is a lot similar but if you notice on that reverse you have there you can see the lathe lines on the memorial you cant see that on this one. but it is a smooth surface on the inside. the nickel i just have the front or face and its a 1991 nickel and on the penny i only have the reverse spooned out
but i think you finally figured out what it was that seems like the most logical solution as far as i could tell
thank you yet again ed but it is still an interesting conversation piece.

I can relate to that! I've heard that a couple of positive things about Alheimers is that:
1. You get to meet new people everyday.
2. You can hide your own easter eggs.

We all make mistakes in spelling/miss spelling. We have a good laugh when that happens. All of us here has made mistakes in spelling. (Even me!)

Coop,

Another advantage is you can search the same roll of cents and keep finding new varieties that you've never seen before.

Coop, I "resemble" that remark!
Nightshade, you will find those "empty coins in all denominations. I have a JFK, minus the rear half.
Spelling/mis-spelling comes in m,any ways, and from many reasons. In my case, I can't see the keyboard, so mis-spelled words. then if I happen ti see the errors, I usually create more, by trying to "proof-read".
Meeting new froiends? Yes That happens every time I go after the mail. They park in the handicap parking, and I have to go around. I keep a string tied to my wifes little fionger, so I can tell who the devil is in the bed with me!. You are 29, Hmm, you have a lot of life ahead of you. Just keep a friend handy, in case you forget who you are. When you get to be my age, you will understand. My avatar is an indicator.
