Probably caused by die wear, notice how the columns are not straight?
The toothpick test is for zincolns to see if something is a bubble in the plating, 1972 was before zincolns started, they have no plating.

Die polishing has been long used as a reason for unexplained abnormalties on a coin.
The numerous die scratches seen in fields are called the same.
Anyone ever seen what the mint uses to "polish" a die ? Anyone have a picture. (If anyone I'd guess Coop !!!)
Why thin field scratches one time, and the next a "piece" that looks like a die break to me??? (like fiddle-fart's coin)
As always, just trying to learn.

Another thing, Fiddle-Fart...if you are asking about doubled dies or repunched mintmarks, they belong in the die varieties section of the forum. They are not errors.
Errors are clips, broadstruck coins, brockages, double struck coins, wrong planchets, saddle strikes, multi-denomination coins..that sort of stuff. Asking about die varieties in the errors section is confusing to others and mixes the purposes of having the areas separated.
