Kind of a cool little error I found today. While this is not uncommon on the modern stuff, it seems to me wheat cents have a substantial number more die breaks, chips & cuds.
Better dies now? They used them longer then?
Mint more dilligent in not letting these get out?
Just curious of opinions....

Jay,
I think there are a couple of things to consider concerning die breaks/chips/etc. The first being metal composition (copper vs copper plated zinc). Another thing is the number of coins struck by a particular die before being retired. Dies now days may strike up to a million or so coins, so the sheer number of coins (billions versus millions) need to be examined to find these defects. Most of the dies used to strike wheaties were used until they just plain wore out and/or broke. I assume it is cheaper and less time consuming to make dies now than it was back in the 'old' days.
There very well maybe a better quality control program, but ultimately, the mint doesn't think minor cracks and or chips is worth pulling the dies out for.

Opinion versus fact - feelings versus knowledge.

What Bob posted is all fact.

Not a problem, really...just a matter of wording. It appeared that you thought Bob's words were based on opinion, which leaves room for doubt. One person's opinion versus another's.

When facts are given, I tend not to call them opinions...just a habit of being as clear as possible when typing rather than speaking. Things tend to be misread often on message boards, and I like for it to be as clear as posisble.
