Hello everyone,
Its been exactly a year that I completely put the coins away due to personal issues going on at the time....loss of job, the economy, etc. You all know the drill. Anyway, My heart wasn't into my searching or my coins at the time so I gave everything including my microscope to my son who also enjoys roll searching for varieties. I figured at least he can keep the family tradition going. Well, The urge came back a couple of months ago but I resisted...until a couple of weeks ago. I just couldn't stand it anymore. I called my son up and proposed we start a little friendly competition. He is in Knoxville and I'm in Nashville. Each month we'll compare our finds and put a point system to our finds and then see who had the better month. Anyway, he was excited I was back at it and I'm glad for the father son enteraction.

I started revisiting all my favorite variety sites and of course CC was the 1st and most visited. I caught up on the postings from the past year as well.
It doesn't look like a whole lot happened last year
and 2008's seem to lack any varieties.
I did get excited when I read about Bob's 1917 finds, 2 in one day.
I went thru my 1st box and it wasn't bad for the 1st one.
a type II 1998
2004p-1DR-011
about 30 other DDR's ranging from 2004 to 2007
and they were all very significant doublings of the 6th and 7th columns, knees, & feet but couldn't attribute them. I threw all the small ones back so they'll grow up to be big strong double dies later.
I also pulled out 20 wheaties, the oldest being 1939
6 canadian and 1 Urraca
So, I just wanted to say howdy to everyone and I hope to hang around for a while now.
Rock

Rock,
It is great to see you back here again. I can certainly empathize with you about what you went through last year. I have had a few times over the years when my heart wasn't quite into it, but I always came back. A day like the one where I found the two 1917 DDO's can certainly get you excited about the hobby again. Sometimes it is good to take a break once in a while.
Congrats on your recent finds and keep us informed about the 'competition' with your son. So far...who's winning??

Thanks Bob. It does feel good to be back. Congrats to you and B.J. on the traildies site. I've been reading and "trying" to comprehend some of it. It hurts my brain to try to obsorbe too much tech terminology too quick. I'll have to read and re-read it a few times. Great photos and attributions. Funny thing is that in my 12 years of searching rolls I have definately come across these in past years but had always dismissed them as flaws. I guess I don't have an inquisitive and scientific mind that others have otherwise I would have kept them and began exploring their origin. You can believe I'm looking for them now though.
As far as who is winning, I don't know yet. I'm hoping to get a hold of my son this weekend so we can compare notes. I'll keep you posted. I'm also in the beginning stages of teaching my youngest son, who is 16, the marvels of Lincoln cent varieties and roll searching. He's pretty interested in it right now so I hope I can fuel his excitement and enthusiasm.
