Yup I'm a newbie, That said, what do you make of this Obverse
Have a similar 1998 penny, but Chuck says it may all be in my mind
What you see is real not photo-shopped. Can't fix my 401K with photo-shopped scans. I have used overlays in the second pic to point out what I saw the first time I looked. And almost dropped dead. Obverse Items in Red, Reverse in Blue. Overlays not perfect but I attribute distorion to Obverse being slightly Convex. most are not incursed but show some elevation above field or are level with field and simply outlined by stress.
The reverse is concave and all devices are there with some lightly incursed items. Scans of reverse will follow if interested.
Thanks,
Neutreno

Interisting scans. The only thing that caught my eye was the "E" of 'we". Myeyes are not capable any more of pinpointing things, as they once were. A scan IMHO, can't give the same detailed view that a photograph does., The reverse might indicate somrthing, but is not shown.
It there are portions of the reversa viewable in hand, it could be a "flip-over strike, but , as I said, it is mostly conjecture on my part.
I just happened to have a 1974 half dollar on my desk. By comparing the "Doller, and the out-streched wing, (in blue), it is not possible to be one coin, due to angles, and placements. I think someone has been "busy> To be sure, I would contact Mike Diamond, and send it to him. He is at Mdia1@aol.com

On this half and the cent that you posted it sounds like you think you see signs of an off centered first strike under the second centered strike.
Problem is that if the first strike was off center then the coin will not fit in the collar for the second strike and both of your coins were struck in collar on the second strike. (so it is not possible)
What you see might be a combination of clash marks and post mint damage or even stains from being stored over other coins.
Here's an off center strike, when the first strike is far off center the coin is not round enough to fit in a collar for a second strike in collar, if a coin like this gets another strike then the second strike will not be in collar:

thanks all,
any help is appreciated in understanding the coins left to me by my Mom. I doubt she "got busy" hopefully I have mis-understood your reference to either my integrity or my mother's.
If I Have, my Apologies
your continuing help is welcome!

nutrino, you are a 'newbie" and haven't tun into all the nice things that can happen to a coin, so it s understandable that you might be concerned about the "busy" I referred to. That is meant to say someone may have "made a coin in their garage", to look like some of the very sought after coins. Ther is no doubt of your, nor your Mom's integrety. When you reach my age, you will have seen about all there is to see,and I'm just a newbie, too. I have only gotten back into collecting a bout three years ago, and it was just "coins". Nothing special, but then i joined this forum, and life has a new meaning! I am very active in varieties, and errors, as a result. I hope you are/were not offended by my references. I have a tendency to lay it on the line, at times. Other times, it takes a week for me to say something, that anyone else would say in a vew words. LOL

I am certain these are all normal coins that show some scratches and hits that - with a healthy amount of imagination - appear to somewhat match various design elements elsewhere on a coin...but because nothing like this is remotely possible in the minting process, and none of it is visible in any of the said scans, I have to assume it's yet another case of misunderstanding of the minting process and how it really works.
I don't mean to sound harsh, but you have to understand what it's like to have decades of experience studying a subject, and over a decade answering questions, teaching classes, writing articles and books, and the like. I have had numerous questions much like yours, and I have had a number of new collectors absolutely insist what they see is there, but it really isn't.
